Coaching

2008/2009 GK Winter Camps Information [pdf]

Although I have just moved into the New Jersey area I have become quite fond of coaching goalkeepers. While growing up, I often experiened what it was like to be a goalkeeper. Coaches would normally give us 10 minutes on our own, to “go warm-up” where we’d hit the ball at each other, and then the team would join in for shooting.

When I finally got the opportunity to have a goalkeeper coach, I realized what a difference that made. Things became so much easier for me! When the coach would ask me why I did what I did, I really didn’t have an answer. You see it seemed a bit unfair to get mad at me for something I had never been taught.

By having a goalkeeper coach, I was finally beginning to learn things on a regular basis so that it became engrained into my head. At the same time, I understand how it is difficult for coaches these days when they have 16 girls on a team plus 2 goalkeepers. It’s hard to rationalize giving half an hour from a practice for one or two players. Just looking at the numbers, it is not fair to the other players, but the goalkeeping position is so important that it is only reasonable that the keepers do get the training they need, so that they can perform at the standard which is expected.

I’ve also come to realize the importance of being a woman as a goalkeeper and as a coach. I can relate a lot more to the athletes on a level that they may not have had in the past. For these reasons and many others I have chosen to coach goalkeepers and help raise the standards of the position at all levels.
