With Canadian Women’s Soccer

We are here in Norway, an hour north of Oslo in Hamar for our international friendly against Norway. We’ve been in camp since the 17th of May where we were in Washington until the 27th then flew here. We scrimmaged the Washington Freedom and though it was not a good day for us as a team, I think it was a blessing because it helped us to recognize some important things about who we are as a team. Since having Carolina as a coach, we’ve been blessed in learning more about the Italian culture which in this sport of soccer has been amazing. We were treated to meeting AC Milan, going to their game in DC and with new additions to our staff, learning what ‘being Italian’ in somewhat like. I think I love Italy even more now :-)

Here are some youtube links to some fun videos’s I’ve taped with the national team in the past couple weeks….

Tomorrow, we finally will play our first game as a team and as a franchise with the name of Philadelphia Independence written on our jerseys. I was going through and reading my entry prior to my first game last year (which was the WPS Inaugural game where LA Sol played Washington Freedom) and it was interesting to read the feelings and thoughts I had leading into that game. This time round it will be a bit different because I know a bit more of what to expect in the level of players but the ‘new-ness’ of my team and what we will produce come game time is still yet to be told. I mean I know my teammates but the truth is we’ve only played together for about a month and in that time we have gotten to know one another on and off the field well but when that whistle blows tomorrow as much as you all will be wondering where we all will stand together, we will as well. I think it is great that we play Atlanta Beat because they are in the same situation. I think their franchise has done well so far in the time they’ve had together but how each team will fair this year, no one truly knows until that whistle blows.

It has been an adjustment and change being in Philly from LA but the best part of it all is that I am playing a sport I truly love and doing a ‘job’ that I am excited to do. I feel so fortunate and blessed to be still playing this sport in front of the fans and kids who enjoy watching me play. WUSA days in Boston brought me some of the best memories of my life, as did playing in LA. Now, this is a new chapter and I know there is so much to look forward to, I truly cannot wait. The girls are great, I get along so well with all of them; the franchise is so supportive and caring of us as players; and this city of brotherly love has showed us enough support that I feel this franchise will be around for a very long time.

With all that said, who knows what tomorrow will bring? I know I will be honored as the national anthem is being played because I am there living that moment in my life. When I look beside me I will see the new faces of my new teammates and I will play my heart out because I know this much from our few weeks together…this group of girls will sweat, bleed and die for me on the field and I can only repay them by committing to do the same. On paper many will argue that there are better teams but at the end of the day, we can only control what we can which is our desire and will to produce every time we step on the field.

2010 WPS season finally begins and I am looking forward to every minute of it….

Stay tuned.

Where's Rhi??? Can anyone find her???

Day 7 was our day off filled with relaxation, massages and getting out bodies ready for the tournament. We went downtown Larnaca and explored the fort, church and Starbucks.  Today it was one session with tonight meetings and some team time. I think we will be playing CRANIUM…my favorite…lots of humming I hear. If that is the truth, my team has no chance :-)

Christine Sinclair's celebration after 100th goal

and many more to come, I am sure….

It was another one of her great finishes as she got her 100th goal for Canada against Poland. We won 3-0. I sat down with Sincy for a fun interview and we will have that up soon but what an amazing mark to have in Canadian soccer. Could not happen to a better person or teammate.Yesterday, not only did she score her 100th goal but she beat our now assistant coach Andrea Neil’s mark for most capped player in Canadian soccer at 133. To continue on making history, Kendra Flock (from Calgary) also had her first international cap and Kelly Parker had her first international goal. All goals, the third coming from D, were beautiful displays of finishing. It was a good day for Canada.

At the 2010 NSCAA Convention in Philly this past January, I had the honor of having some fun interviews with 1st round draft picks soon after they heard their names announced. Later that evening I got to be the emcee at the PUMA unveiling of our 2010 WPS Uniforms which I may have found a new passion/hobby. PUMA actually gave me a mic, and audience and said “go”… I really did not know what to expect but I had a blast up on the stage and really had a great time with it all. I cannot wait to see these uniforms out on the field!!!!

Many of you may know by now but in case you have not been following the WPS, my old team of LA Sol folded in the last hour at the end of January and I was selected in the to Philadelphia Independence in the first ever Disperal Draft.

I had mixed emotions for days. I mean I was so sad to leave LA and what I thought was going to be my life, yet at the same time I was so excited to be wanted and picked up by Philadelphia Independence . Philly is so close to Jersey where I had spent my 5 past off-seasons and I had heard so many great things about the city, the people, the franchise and knew some of my new teammates I knew I had so much to look forward to. I had met the coach Paul Riley before and immediately upon meeting him, I knew he would have success whereever he was so now that I get to play for him I know we will have success. Most of you know that I am not a huge fan of the cold, so the warm off-seasons I was definitely looking forward to but I know that everything happens for a reason and God has a plan for me to be in Philadelphia so I am looking forward to it. I love getting to know new people and be in a new place so there will be so much to discover. In addition to that, I am still playing the sport I love, in the best league in the world and I will have some of the best players in the world to play with everyday. I cannot wait…

I then got to do a PUMA photo shoot in Santa Monica, California which was fun. I got another chance to be spoiled with hair and make up done as well as my new gloves for the season…made me feel special :=)

I’m heading off to Cyprus, Greece to play with CANADA and I am so excited to get back in the swing of things. The Olympics are up and on in my hometown which I will miss but it is not a bad thing to miss for as I will be representing our beautiful country of Canada. I am so proud to be a Canadian and I cannot wait to step back on the field and play for our country once again, it has been tooooooo long. Till Cyprus…

2010 has started off with an exciting bang for me. First this honor which was such a pleasant surprise. It has always been such an honor for me to play for my country and represent Canada every time I step on the field and to be recognized like this is such a pleasure.

This past week I had my last set of sessions in New Jersey before my big move to California and coaching the High School and college kids have made me realize how I truly love giving back to the game I love so much. Seeing how my experience can affect these goalkeepers inspires me to wanting to be a better coach and student of the position.

I’ve also been asked to emcee the PUMA uniform unveiling event at the NSCAA convention this weekend in Philly. The actual show will be Friday night at TRUST and I am excited about this new challenge. Earlier in the day, starting at 10am will be the Women’s Pro Soccer Draft and I have been asked to do interviews with the first round picks. It should be fun and I know an exciting time for the girls waiting to know where their future stands as I am sure Friday cannot come soon enough. This year I await many new journeys and it has already started on a great note. I cannot wait to see what else is in store for myself, Canada soccer and the LA SOL.

Thanks for checking in and may this year be your year.
